Things I Amplify from the web

Biz Stone talks conversation w/ Zuck

I,for one, am glad there was no acquisition of Twitter by Facebook. I like both and while there is some overlap, I use them for different purposes. I do agree with the last paragraph about Twitter adding the ability to add comments to tweets. That would be nice.

Sometimes you want to RT a Facebook comment and like a Tweet …ha.

Other tidbits from the interview included the story behind how Twitter was formed within Odeo, why Biz is known as Biz (he couldn’t pronounce his first name Christopher as a child, and said ‘Biztopher’ instead) and that he takes a salary (that isn’t terribly large). He also said that Twitter needs to add the ability for people to add a comment to retweets.

E-Mail Gets an Instant Makeover

I'm all for advancement in technology but also believe we can't forget the basics. If you can speak and write effectively the "right way" then using short forms of communication is fine. The bottom line to me is that people should , young & older, learn the fundamentals of communication before they start using the quick & easy way exclusively. There is a time & place for both.

E-Mail Gets an Instant Makeover

Some, predictably, turn up their noses at the informality and the abbreviated spellings that are rampant in bite-size, phone-based transmissions. Judith Kallos, who writes a blog and books about e-mail etiquette, complains that the looser, briefer and less grammatical the writing, the less deep the thoughts and emotions behind it.

“We’re going down a road where we’re losing our skills to communicate with the written word,” Ms. Kallos said.

Google TV Faces Delays Amid Poor reviews

I like Google but sometimes you need to stay in your lane and not try to dominate everything without full understanding.

To master the consumer electronics game, Google should develop more sophisticated partnership skills and issue polished products, Mr. McQuivey said.

“Google needs to learn some of those abilities — both in terms of partnerships with broadcasters and working with hardware partners,” he said. “You can give me the recipe for the absolute best chocolate chip cookies in the world, but until I put the ingredients together and bake them at exactly the right temperature for the right time, they’re not cookies, and that’s where Google TV is.”

Artists get own micro-philanthropy site

I Love this idea and it is a very creative way to get creativity out in the market. I have started thinking about a finding a way to get to Cuba and do some documentary photography and perhaps moving pictures as well. This could be the ticket. Pun intended.

"USA Projects is both a fund-raising engine and a robust social network that gives artists the ability to raise money for dream projects and gives the rest of us a way to connect with them and participate in the creative process," said Samuel Hoi, a United States Artists board member.

For Spike Lee, a New Requiem for New Orleans

The first part of this documentary was very powerful and I eagerly look forward to the conclusion tonight. I agree with Spike in terms of him being fair. The documentary asks tough questions and let's the people - good & bad - speak for themselves. Ultimately that's how you get the TRUTH.

Q. Do you think they’re turning you down because of who you are?

A. I think some people think that I’ve already had my mind made up and therefore they can’t win. But I disagree with that. I think that I’m a very fair documentary filmmaker. And at the same time, I’m going to ask some hard questions. For them, it’s a no-win situation, so I didn’t expect them to say yes.

Why Republicans Will Raise Your Taxes

What goes up must come down, and I'm talking about the "explosive" growth of the last 10 years or so, the wars, tax cuts for top 2%, etc. Hard choices need to be made and made soon.

Amplifyd from www.newsweek.com
Because for the first time in the past two decades, the math—both fiscal and political—might require it. In 2009 the national debt was 53 percent of GDP. That’s less than ideal. But it’s nothing compared with the projected 2050 debt: 350 percent of GDP. Economists say that closing the gap, which stems from long-term forces like rising health-care costs and the retiring of the baby boomers rather than fleeting issues like President Obama’s stimulus package, will require both lower spending and higher taxes. And while Republicans tend, at least in theory, to support spending cuts next year, and the year after, it will be impossible to keep cutting through year 40 and beyond. Right now, the United States spends less as a share of GDP than all but nine of its 31 fellow OECD nations; our revenue intake, meanwhile, ranks next to last, with 2009’s taxes slipping to their lowest level as a percentage of personal income since 1950. There isn’t much left to cut on either side of the equation, and forecasters predict that our economic growth may be slowing for good. If we’re serious about tackling the debt, we will eventually need more revenue.Read more at www.newsweek.com

THE SOFA WARS In the Living Room, Hooked on Pay TV

I don't watch a lot of TV but what I do watch is on cable and I really like those shows. Obviously a la carte viewing would be ideal but in the meantime cutting out cable is what I need to do to make good financial sense. Hulu here I come !

It is a fantasy shared by many Americans: dropping cable television and its fat monthly bills and turning instead to the wide-open frontier of Internet video.
